Currently ranked No. 55 in the world, 22-year-old Kristina Brandi is coming off her best season on the WTA Tour. Brandi captured her first WTA title in 1999, winning the $180,000 Heineken Trophy in the Netherlands. A resident of Tampa, Florida, Brandi is coached by her father, Joe, who played on the ATP Tour. Both her parents played college tennis, and her uncle, Andy, is the women's tennis coach at the University of Florida. Check out Brandi's diary every other week on CNNSI.com.

I feel privileged to report that I was one of the very first to bring in the new millennium way over here in Auckland, New Zealand, which is the first stop on the WTA's 2000 calendar. It's not as noteworthy as being first in flight or first on the moon, but there is a definite excitement in being first to see the new millennium!

Well, it was total millennium madness at the Novotel Hotel. At 8 p.m., with just hours to go, the hotel was taking necessary precautions for the Y2K bug. Vitamins and mini-flashlights were left in the guests' rooms, and all the tennis players were asked to fill up their bathtubs with cold water -- just in case!

At 11:55 the elevators were shut down and people were herding outside to see the fireworks displays. I knew the best view in the house was my hotel-room balcony so my friends and I had our own little party on the landing until after midnight. The celebration went on and on into the night and there was no way any of the tennis players could sleep without wearing headphones! DEFINITELY NOT JUST ANOTHER DAY ON THE TOUR!

Welcome to the new millennium!

-- Kristina
