AUCKLAND, New Zealand (Ticker) -- Second-seeded Magnus Norman of Sweden advanced to the semifinals but No. 6 Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands and No. 7 Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain were defeated Thursday at the $350,000 Heineken Open.
Norman has not lost a set in the tournament after topping Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-2, in a quarterfinal match. Norman, who last season tied Americans Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras for the lead in ATP Tour titles with five, has dropped more than three games in a set just once this week.
In the semifinals, Norman will face Gaston Gaudio of Argentina, who upended Schalken, 6-1, 6-2. Gaudio has defeated two seeded players to advance to his first semifinal.
Ferrero, the youngest player remaining in the draw one month shy of his 20th birthday, fell to countryman Juan Balcells, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Balcells was a qualifier and also upset top seed Tommy Haas.
In the most intriguing match heading into the day, American Michael Chang was leading Magnus Gustafsson when the Swede was forced to retire due to a knee injury. Gustaffson was unable to continue after a 59-minute rain delay.
This tournament, which serves as a tuneup for the Australian Open, offers a first prize of $46,000.
