HOBART, Australia (AP) -- Sixteen-year-old Kim Clijsters of Belgium upset defending champion Chanda Rubin of the United States 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 Saturday to win the Tasmanian International tennis tournament.
Clijsters, ranked 43rd in the world, went through the qualifiers to the fourth round of last year's Wimbledon before losing to Steffi Graf.
Then she made the third round of the U.S. Open before losing in three sets to eventual winner Serena Williams.
Against the fourth-seeded Rubin, Clijsters started nervously and had trouble finding her range in a gusty wind. But Rubin's game fell away in the face of a barrage of searing shots from Clijsters.
She said the win would give her a great boost for the Australian Open where she plays experienced compatriot Dominique Van Roost in the first round. She beat Van Roost in the Luxembourg final last year to win her first WTA title.
