SAN JOSE, California (AP) -- Justin Gimelstob had 11 aces and just six unforced errors in a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory over eighth-seeded Jan-Michael Gambill on Monday night in the first round of the Sybase Open.

In another upset, Sweden's Mikael Tillstrom beat sixth-seeded Franco Squillari of Argentina 7-5, 7-5.

No. 7 Wayne Ferreira of South Africa was the only seeded player to advance on the opening day of the US$ 350,000 ATP Tour event, defeating Jeff Salzenstein 6-4, 6-4.

Haiti's Ronald Agenor, Finland's Ville Liukko and Argentina's Hernan Gumy also opened with victories.

Agenor beat Philip King 7-5, 6-2, Liukko defeated Italy's Laurence Tieleman 7-5, 6-3, and Gumy beat Australia's Todd Woodbridge 6-4, 6-2.

No. 3 Vincent Spadea, No. 4 Michael Chang and No. 5 Jim Courier begin play Tuesday, and top-seeded Andre Agassi and No. 2 Mark Philippoussis, the defending champion, open Wednesday night.
