MARSEILLE, France (AP) -- Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who rallied from a set down in the first round, was beaten 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 by Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic on Thursday in the $500,000 Marseille Open.

"When I play the Russians, whether it's Kafelnikov or Safin, I find them easy to play, " Ljubicic said. "Kafel's game suits me. I beat him 6-1, 6-2 in our only other meeting in Monte Carlo last year."

Ljubicic also gave credit to his countryman Goran Ivanisevic for his upset victory.

"Goran inspires me. It's great to see him getting back on his game," Ljubicic said. "I like to find myself on the same tournament as him. We push each other. We cheer each other on."

Ivanisevic is already qualified for the quarterfinals on Friday, when he will face Switzerland's Marc Rosset.

Rosset knocked out eighth-seeded Arnaud Clement of France, 6-4, 7-5.

Seventh-seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden also fell, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Switzerland's Roger Federer. Federer advances to play Ljubicic.

Andreas Vinciguerra of Sweden, one of only five teens to finish in the top 100 last year, beat Jacobo Diaz of Spain 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 and will meet fourth-seeded Sebastien Grosjean in the quarterfinals.

Grosjean beat fellow Frenchman Lionel Roux 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Defending champion Fabrice Santoro of France was a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 winner over Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands. Santoro faces Frenchman Thierry Guardiola, who beat Jan Kroslak of Slovakia 6-3, 6-3.
