Easy day at Estoril Henman defeats Gaudio to advance to quarterfinalsPosted: Thursday April 13, 2000 01:37 PM
OEIRAS, Portugal (AP) -- Britain's Tim Henman reserved his place in the quarterfinals of the Estoril Open with a 6-4, 6-4 victory Thursday over Argentinian Gaston Gaudio. Henman, eager to clinch a trophy after losing his last six finals on the ATP Tour, gave a mostly graceless performance but did enough to exploit the 21-year-old Argentinian's sometimes reckless shots. No. 4 seed Henman will meet the winner between Ukrainian Andrei Medvedev, who beat defending titlist Albert Costa of Spain in the first round, and Austria's Markus Hipfl. Their match was halted by rain with Medvedev serving for the victory. Unseeded Spaniard Francisco Clavet, who ousted top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov, also made it into the last eight, defeating Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 7-5. Clavet will play against No. 8 seed Frenchman Nicolas Escude, who bested Costa Rican Juan Antonio Marin 6-1, 6-2. In the women's tournament, No. 3 seed Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France exited the tournament after a 7-6 (7), 6-4 loss to Italy's Tathiana Garbin. No. 8 seed Angeles Montolio of Spain won 6-1, 6-4 against Seda Noorlander of the Netherlands.
