OEIRAS, Portugal (AP) -- Ukrainian Andrei Medvedev powered into the semifinals of the Estoril Open with an authoritative 6-2, 6-3 victory Friday over Britain's Tim Henman.

Medvedev, the defeted finalist in last year's French Open, will meet Spaniard Carlos Moya who rallied to beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Medvedev, who won here in 1993 and is currently ranked 33rd, comprehensively outplayed Henman, breaking the No. 4 seed's service twice to take the first set and racing to a 4-0 lead in the second before crusing to victory.

Moya's victory continued his return to form following a recurrent back injury. In the second round, the Spaniard ousted No. 2 seed Magnus Norman.

Unseeded at Estoril and currently ranked 46th in the world, Moya retired from the Australian Open in January with the same injury that forced him to withdraw from last year's U.S. Open.

Other quarterfinals to be played later had Spaniard Francisco Clavet against Frenchman Nicolas Escude, seeded eighth, and No. 3 seed Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador against Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero.

In the women's quarterfinals, top seed Anke Huber of Germany advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory against Spaniard Cristina Torrens-Valero, but No. 7 seed Rita Kuti Kis of Hungary exited the tournament after a 7-6 (1), 6-4 defeat against Italian Tathiana Garbin.

Garbin will meet Huber in Saturday's semifinals.

No. 2 seed Nathalie Dechy of France advanced, besting Spaniard Angeles Montolio 6-3, 6-4.

Italian Silvina Farina was to meet Switzerland's Miroslava Vavrinec in a late match.
