Lindsay Davenport will lose the WTA's No. 1 ranking to Martina Hingis. AP

ROME (Reuters) -- World number one Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn from the Madrid Open starting on Monday because of the back injury which has upset her preparations for the French Open.

"Unfortunately my back is not feeling that good and I have decided to go to Paris tomorrow and continue to have treatment," the American said on Sunday. "I'm very disappointed I won't be able to come to Madrid and defend my title."

Davenport pulled out of the Italian Open on Thursday after straining her lower back during a morning warm-up for her third round tie with Italy's Giulia Casoni.

She defaulted the match immediately and said she had no idea if she would be fit to play at the French Open starting on May 29.

Her withdrawal in Rome means Switzerland's Martina Hingis will go back to the top of the WTA rankings when they are released on Monday.

Davenport and Hingis have switched places at the top of the rankings four times this year.
