2001 WTA Tour Notes & Netcords for week of 2/12-2/18

Posted: Thur February 15, 2001 at 4:47 p.m. EST

PARIS (Ticker) -- Eighth seed Amelie Mauresmo became the fourth Frenchwoman to win the $565,000 Open Gaz de France when she defeated sixth-seed Anke Huber of Germany on Sunday. Mauresmo captured her third career title and the $90,000 first prize with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory. "It is a very emotional win for me," Mauresmo said. "The whole week I have enjoyed an incredible atmosphere provided by the great Parisian public. Winning in Paris has always been one of my dreams." Other French players to keep the title in the homeland were Nathalie Tauziat last year, Mary Pierce in 1998 and Julie Halard-Decugis in 1996. Mauresmo, 21, downed the third-seeded Tauziat in Saturday's semifinals. A runner-up here two years ago, Mauresmo won her first title since January 2000 in Sydney. The setback stalled the impressive career revival by the 26-year-old Huber, who has battled back from a wrist injury suffered in the U.S. Open last summer. Huber was competing in her first final since July in Sopot, Poland. "Amelie played solid," Huber said. "Her backhand is very good and she also served well today. I need to play against more top players to feel that I am really back." Huber lost in the final of this event for the second time. She lost to Martina Hingis in 1997. In doubles action, Virginie Razzano and Iva Majoli defeated the tournament's No. 1 seed of Kimberly Po and Nathalie Tauziat 6-3, 7-5. It was the first career Sanex WTA Tour doubles title for Razzano and Majoli COURTSIDE NEWS Lee Jackson Inducted into Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame Sanex WTA Tour's own Lee Jackson was recently inducted in to the Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame for her significant contribution to women's tennis. Jackson, who currently serves the Tour as a player/sponsor liaison, has dedicated more than 40 years of her life to women's tennis. "I've done everything in tennis," Jackson said. "You name it, I've done it. I've never done anything else." Jackson's career in tennis began by umpiring various local tournaments, then in Jan. of 1975, the newly formed women's pro Tour hired Jackson as an umpire. 26 years later, Jackson continues to dedicate her life to the growth of the women' professional tennis tour. "It's just been the most rewarding experience of my life. I've made the best, closet and dearest friends through the sport of women's tennis," Jackson said. Jackson's credentials for this not only include her 26 years as a member of the Sanex WTA Tour, but she served as Vice President of the Eastern Tennis Association, President of the Eastern Umpires Association and columnist for World Tennis Magazine. "Lee has devoted her entire life unselfishly to the game of tennis and we are honored to be recognizing her," said Lois Price, president of Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame's Board of Directors. "Lee's dedication to the growth of women's tennis is immeasurable. The Sanex WTA Tour is honored to have Lee as a co-worker and more importantly, a friend," said Tour Senior Vice President Peachy Kellmeyer. Jackson will be inducted along with Dick Stockton, George Seawagon and Paul Cranis in a ceremony held on April 20, 2001 at the United Nations Delegates Dining Room in New York City.
