Still searching Kournikova fails to win Hong Kong exhibition
HONG KONG (AP) -- Australia's Jelena Dokic upset top-seeded Anna Kournikova of Russia 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 Saturday in the final of the Watson's Water Challenge exhibition tournament to win her first professional tennis title. It was another disappointment for the eighth-ranked Kournikova, who has yet to win a win a WTA title. The 17-year-old unseeded Dokic had to fight hard in the first set, which she won in a tiebreak after both players broke each other three times. The Australian dominated the second set, although she squandered four match points in the seventh game while leading 5-1 and then lost her serve in the next game. However, the Australian came back to break Kournikova in the ninth game to win the match. "I really had a great tournament. It was a tough match," Dokic said. "Anna was playing well in the first set. She did not miss anything but I played some smart tennis," she added. The Australian, ranked 25th on the WTA tour, said she will take a one-week break before competing in the Australian Open later this month. Dokic beat second-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. Kournikova advanced to the final with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over American Jennifer Capriati. Eight players competed in the tournament. They included Americans Lisa Raymond and Chanda Rubin, Olga Barabanschikova of Belarus, and China's Yi Jiangqian.
