'Not what it used to be' Cash blasts women players for being out of shape
LONDON (AP) -- Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash has accused women tennis players of being overweight and out of shape, comparing Lindsay Davenport to a shot putter. Quoted Friday in The Mirror, Cash said the Williams sisters are the only players on the women's tour who are in top condition. "Women's tennis is not what it used to be with Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Hana Mandlikova," Cash was quoted as saying. "They were incredibly fit and worked hard. These days, girls can take it easy and still make millions. "Look at Lindsay Davenport. She's a big girl. When you look at her, you think, `Whoa, there is no way she is going to be a tennis player. Put her in the shot put instead.' "Aside from the Williams sisters and perhaps Amelie Mauresmo, women tennis players are certainly all carrying extra weight and they shouldn't be. The Williams sisters are about the only one that are really fit - and that's coming from a coach and someone who is completely unbiased." Cash, an Australian, won Wimbledon in 1987. He is currently coaching British player Greg Rusedski. Cash's comments were published three days before the start of the Australian Open, where Davenport is the defending champion. Another former Wimbledon champion, Richard Krajicek, created controversy in the early 1990s when he described women players as "lazy, fat pigs."
