North Carolina-bound U.S.-India Davis Cup tie to be in Winston-SalemUpdated: Friday May 04, 2001 11:46 AM
ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- The United States' Davis Cup tie against India in September will take place indoors in Winston-Salem, N.C. Joel Coliseum, which normally plays host to Wake Forest University basketball, will be the facility for the World Group qualifying round tie Sept. 21-23. A surface has not officially been announced yet, but the Winston-Salem Journal reports that a clay court is most likely. The coliseum holds 14,000 in its normal configuration, but the capacity may be cut in half by closing off the upper level and part of the lower level, the newspaper reported. The winner of the tie, which will feature two singles matches Friday, one doubles match Saturday and two reverse singles matches Sunday, advances to the 2002 World Group. The loser drops into a zonal group and wouldn't be eligible to compete for the Davis Cup until 2003. U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe hasn't announced the makeup of his team yet, but it is expected to include young stars Jan-Michael Gambill and Andy Roddick. Both were on the team for the 3-2 loss to Switzerland in February that bumped the U.S. from World Group play. Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras have indicated that they don't plan to play in the tie. Roddick won his first ATP title last week in Atlanta -- on clay, no less -- and said afterward that playing Davis Cup was a high priority for him, as long as McEnroe wanted him on the team. McEnroe, who took a red-eye flight in from Seattle specifically to watch Roddick play in the final, said only, "Looking good!" India defeated China and Japan 3-2 to advance through zonal competition. India is led by the doubles pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, who won the French Open and Wimbledon titles in 1999. The U.S. and India met in 1994 in Davis Cup competition, with the U.S. winning 5-0 in India.
