'Scud' sidelined again Philippoussis out of French, doubtful for Wimbledon
MELBOURNE (Reuters) -- Australia's Mark Philippoussis will miss this month's French Open because of knee surgery and is in doubt for Wimbledon, his manager John McCurdy said on Friday. "At the moment he's not hitting any balls," McCurdy told Reuters. McCurdy said Philippoussis, the world No. 16 and three times a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon, was doing rehabilitation at his home in Florida after having his second knee operation in six months. "At the moment he's out for the French Open and he's a tentative starter for the grass-court season," McCurdy said. "There's no pressure on any deadline. Generally he wouldn't want to go into a tournament like Wimbledon [in June] without any preparation." Big-serving Philippoussis, 24, had knee surgery in December, causing him to miss the Australian Open in January. The former U.S. Open finalist returned to win a tournament in Memphis in February but felt more pain during a Miami tournament in March and had another operation. "After Miami he had another scan which showed a new tear," McCurdy said. "It's just really unfortunate for Mark. I guess he's still young and still has five or six years of good tennis in front of him. He's not rushing it. He's a very positive guy. It's a setback. "Obviously he's aiming to win one of the grand slam tournaments. Late last year he was playing as good as anyone in the world. "He really believes he has his best tennis in front of him."
