PARIS (AP) -- World No. 1 Martina Hingis was confirmed Wednesday as the top-seeded player at the French Open, with American player Venus Williams seeded second.

Seedings at the $10 million French Open, which starts Monday, are based on the WTA's latest world ranking.

Lindsay Davenport was third in the seedings list released by event organizers.

Jennifer Capriati, the winner of the only previous Grand Slam event this year, the Australian Open, was seeded fourth. The 25-year-old exited the French Open in the first round last year but was a semifinalist at Roland Garros in 1990.

Three-time French Open champion Monica Seles was seeded sixth, and Serena Williams was seventh.

The French Open, which is played on clay, is the only Grand Slam event that Hingis, 20, has not won. The top-ranked Swiss star was runner-up at Roland Garros in 1997 and 1999. She has not taken a Grand Slam title since her victory in the 1999 Australian Open.

Hingis has had a shaky start to the clay-court season, losing in the semifinals of the Italian and German Opens, both times to France's Amelie Mauresmo, who is seeded No. 5 at Roland Garros.

Venus Williams, 20, was a quarterfinalist at the French Open last year and in 1998.

Defending French Open champion Mary Pierce withdrew from the event earlier Wednesday with a back injury.
