Morariu out of hospital Doubles standout continues to battle leukemia
MIAMI (AP) -- Top-ranked doubles player Corina Morariu was released Thursday from the hospital where she was receiving treatment for a rare form of leukemia. "Her spirits are great and she has been overwhelmed by the response from people throughout the world," said her agent, David Egdes of IMG in Cleveland. "She is not yet out of the woods, but everyone is encouraged by her response to treatments thus far." In May, Morariu, 23, was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and had been receiving IV and oral chemotherapy treatments at an undisclosed Miami hospital. Her husband and coach Andrew Turcinovich had accompanied her in the hospital. Treatments will continue on an outpatient basis for a time, but she will require additional inpatient IV chemotherapy. Morariu, born in Detroit, turned pro in 1997 after winning three junior Grand Slam championships. She missed five months of action that year because of a kidney infection. Since then, she has won that 1999 Wimbledon doubles title with Lindsay Davenport and this year's Australian Open mixed doubles event with Ellis Ferreira. In all, Morariu has earned 12 WTA Tour doubles titles. She also won the 1999 Bol Ladies Open singles title on the WTA Tour. Morariu earned the No. 1 ranking twice last year in doubles for individual players.
