Pierce, Garbin pull out of U.S. Open
Updated: Tuesday August 21, 2001 9:50 PM NEW YORK (AP) -- France's Mary Pierce and Tathiana Garbin of Italy have withdrawn from the U.S. Open with injuries, organizers said Monday. Pierce, 26, pulled out facing continued problems with her lower back. Pierce, who won the 2000 French Open, has made it to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open twice, in 1999 and 1994. Garbin, 24, suffered a herniated disc at the estyle.com Classic in Manhattan Beach, California. Her best result in the U.S. Open came last year, when she made it to the third round. Two stars withdrew from the men's competition Friday: big-serving Dutchman Richard Krajicek and Swede Magnus Norman.
