New generation Roddick expected to lead U.S. squad for India tieUpdated: Wednesday September 05, 2001 5:17 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Andy Roddick's meteoric rise in men's tennis makes him the favorite to be named to the United States Davis Cup team when captain Patrick McEnroe announces his selections on Thursday. The U.S. will be appearing in the Davis Cup qualifying round for the first time since 1994 when it hosts India from September 21-23 at Winston-Salem, N.C. Roddick ended last year as the top-ranked junior, and has carried over that success to the ATP, winning three titles this year and reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal Tuesday at the U.S. Open. The 19-year-old Roddick is the youngest male to advance to the U.S. Open quarterfinals since Andre Agassi in 1988. In February, Roddick made his Davis Cup debut and won his dead rubber as the U.S. lost to Switzerland, 3-2, at Basel. The defeat spoiled McEnroe's debut as captain after taking over from brother John, who resigned after only one year at the helm. Jan-Michael Gambill is a question mark to be named to the team after inflammation in his shoulder led to a second-round retirement at the U.S. Open. Davis Cup veteran Todd Martin is a possibility to join Roddick in singles, as is former Harvard star James Blake, who extended Australia's Lleyton Hewitt to five sets at the U.S. Open. Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, who square off in the U.S. Open quarterfinals Wednesday, have ruled themselves out of the qualifying round. Donald Johnson and Jared Palmer are the favorites to be the doubles team after winning Wimbledon and reaching the U.S. Open men's doubles final earlier Wednesday.
