SYDNEY (Reuters) -- Former U.S. Open finalist Mark Philippoussis will return to competitive tennis at the Salem Open in Hong Kong next week after a seven-month absence because of a knee injury.

"He's really ready to go and hopefully everything goes well for him," the Australian's manager John McCurdy said on Saturday.

Philippoussis, who was beaten by compatriot Patrick Rafter in the 1998 U.S. Open final, has been plagued by injuries for the past year.

He underwent surgery after injuring himself at Wimbledon in 2000 and broke down again after making his comeback this year, forcing him to undergo another operation.

McCurdy said Philippoussis, whose ranking has slipped from a career high of eight to 87, would have a week off after the Salem Open before travelling to Europe for the Masters Series events in Stuttgart and Paris.

"Realistically, you just hope he gets through these tournaments and hopefully get a few matches under his belt and gets a bit of confidence going heading into the summer in Australia," McCurdy said.
