Gimpy Roddick American retires in Hong Kong after spraining ankle
HONG KONG (AP) -- Andy Roddick hurt his foot during the first round of the Salem Open on Tuesday and quit in the third set against Brazil's Andre Sa. Roddick won the first set and lost the second. He sprained his right foot midway through the third set and was treated on the court. He stopped after one more game, giving Sa a 3-6, 6-4, 3-3 victory in the $400,000 event. Roddick called the injury a "fluke inflammation" and said he was in top shape entering the match. He is not sure if he will play in Tokyo next week. "I'm having trouble putting any pressure on it," Roddick said. "I don't know right now how long it will take to clear up. I have been told to rest it for four to five days." Roddick, seeded fourth, is ranked 15th in the ATP Champions Race. Sa is ranked 121st. "You never want to win a match like this," Sa said. "It is not satisfying. But at the same time I'm fortunate to win." Second-seeded Marat Safin moved into the second round, beating Hong Kong's John Hui 6-3, 6-2. Also advancing were third-seed Sebastian Grosjean of France and Michael Chang. Grosjean beat Germany's Lars Burgsmuller 7-6 (4), 6-4, and Chang defeated fellow American James Blake 7-6 (3), 7-5. Safin wants to improve his chances of qualifying for the Tennis Masters Cup in Sydney, Australia. "I'm quite satisfied with the way I'm playing," the Russian said. "I did just enough for a beginning of a tournament." Two weeks ago, Safin won in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for his first title this year. He advanced in the Champions Race standings from 15 to 11. The top eight qualify for Sydney. Also, Rainer Schuettler of Germany beat Michael Russell of the United States 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3); Cecil Mamit of the United States defeated Ivo Hueberger of Switzerland 7-6 (5), 6-4; Michel Kratochvil of Switzerland topped Francisco Clavet of Spain 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4); Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark defeated Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea 6-1, 7-5.
