MOSCOW (AP) -- The Kremlin Cup opened Monday without stars Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport, who withdrew in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

In first-round women's action Monday, wild-card entry Anastasia Myskina beat Magui Serna of Spain 6-2, 6-2, Francesca Schiavone of Italy defeated Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-4, 6-2, and Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic eliminated Cristina Torrens-Valero of Spain 6-0, 6-3.

On the men's side, where Yevgeny Kafelnikov is seeking his fifth straight title, sixth-seeded Fabrice Santoro breezed into the second round by beating Galo Blanco 6-2, 6-1 in less than an hour.

Elsewhere, Andrei Stoliarov of Russia ousted Michal Tabara of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3, Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic needed just 38 minutes to beat countryman Bohdan Ulihrach 6-1, 6-0, and Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia topped Vladimir Voltchkov of Belarus 6-4, 7-5.
