MOSCOW (AP) -- Defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov beat wild card Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-3 in an all-Russian match Tuesday to reach the second round of the Kremlin Cup.

Kafelnikov, the top-seeded player in the $2.2 million tournament, is a four-time winner in Moscow. He is seeking his second title this year.

Fifth-seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden downed Davide Sanguinetti of Italy 6-2, 6-3, and Thomas Enqvist of Sweden rallied past Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Alexandra Stevenson traveled to Moscow following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and is the only American in the women's draw. Stevenson, a qualifier, downed Anne Kremer of Luxembourg 6-4, 6-3.

Fifth-seeded Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia defeated Lina Krasnoroutskaya 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

"Lina was returning pretty well tonight, putting constant pressure on me," Dokic said.

Dokic, going for her third title this year, made 12 double faults.

"Usually I serve much better, but today I felt slightly tired as the match went on," she said.

Olympic silver medalist Elena Dementieva of Russia, seeded eighth, ousted compatriot Elena Bovina 6-3, 6-4.

Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic beat Angeles Montolio of Spain 7-6 (6), 6-1, and Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan downed lucky loser Tatiana Panova of Russia 6-2, 6-2.

Also, Jerome Golmard of France fired 11 aces to beat compatriot Julien Boutter 7-5, 6-3, and Wayne Ferreira of South Africa eliminated Franco Squillari of Argentina 6-4, 7-5.
