DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Top-seeded Andy Roddick beat Russia's Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 6-1 in windy conditions Tuesday night in the International Championships.

"It's more of a relief to get through it because first-round matches are always the toughest," said Roddick, who lives in the area. "Playing at home, I feel I want to do well because my friends don't get to see me play often, once, maybe twice a year."

Roddick, who won his fourth career title two weeks ago in Memphis, Tenn., will face South Korea's Hyung-Taik Lee on Thursday. Lee beat Spain's David Sanchez 6-2, 6-3.

Second-seeded Jan-Michael Gambill began his title defense with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory over Australia's Wayne Arthurs.

Fourth-seeded Nicolas Massu of Chile, fifth-seeded Davide Sanguinetti of Italy and eighth-seeded Markus Hipfl of Austria also advanced. Massu beat Jeff Morrison 6-4, 6-4, Sanguinetti defeated Belgium's Christophe Rochus 0-6, 6-4, 6-1, and Hipfl beat Hungary's Atilla Savolt 7-5, 7-5.
