Morariu feeling better, plans to play benefit event

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Reuters) -- Former Wimbledon doubles champion Corina Morariu has almost beaten the leukemia that struck her last summer and is preparing to take to the court later this month for a cancer benefit event.

"I can tell you the worst is over," her father, Dr. Albin Morariu, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel at the weekend.

"Before we were going day by day and week by week. Now, we are going month by month and year by year.

"She's not 100 percent, but physically she is fantastic. She says this is the best time of her life."

Morariu, doubles champion at Wimbledon in 1999 with regular partner Lindsay Davenport, was diagnosed with leukemia last year and underwent chemotherapy in Miami.

Her neurologist father told the newspaper that two marrow scans since had turned up negative and that there is now just a 10 percent chance the leukemia will reappear.
