STRASBOURG, France (AP) -- Anna Kournikova on Tuesday exited the first round of the Strasbourg Open, a tuneup for the French Open, by losing 7-6 (5), 6-2 to Hungary's Petra Mandula.

Kournikova missed last year's French Open because of injury. She has never gotten past the fourth round at the only Grand Slam event played on clay. She exited last week's Italian Open, another clay-court tournament, in the third round.

This year's French Open runs May 27-June 9.

Mandula was a quarterfinalist at Roland Garros last year, losing in straight sets to eventual runner-up Kim Clijsters.

In other first-round action, Greece's Eleni Daniilidou beat fourth-seeded Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan 6-7 (3), 7-5, 7-5.

Eighth-seeded Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland advanced by defeating Indonesian qualifier Angelique Widjaja 6-2, 6-1, while Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva beat Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian of Switzerland 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
