Sanchez-Vicario ousted, Seles breezes in Madrid

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- American Chanda Rubin upset second-seeded
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-3, 7-6 (6) Wednesday to reach the
quarterfinals of the dlrs 170,000 Madrid Open.
Also, top-seeded American Monica Seles breezed past Marta
Marrero of Spain 7-5, 6-2 while No. 5 seed Anna Smashnova of Israel
downed Australian Alicia Molik 7-5, 6-2.
In other matches, Emile Loit of France trounced Zimbabwean Cara
Black 6-4, 6-4; Argentine Clarisa Fernandez ousted Marissa Irvin of
the United States 6-4, 3-6, 6-0; Magui Serna of Spain beat
Australian Nicole Pratt 6-2, 6-2; and Argentina's Paola Suarez
knocked out Russian Dinara Safina 7-5, 6-1.
