Seles, Rubin advance to Madrid Open semifinals

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Americans Monica Seles and Chanda Rubin won in straight sets Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Madrid Open.

The top-seeded Seles beat fifth-seeded Anna Smashnova 6-3, 6-2, and Rubin beat Magui Serna 6-3, 6-3.

Leading 4-3 in the opening set, Seles won five straight games to close out the first set and take a 3-0 lead in the second. She needed just 55 minutes to advance.

Seles will face Paola Suarez of Argentina, a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Clarisa Fernandez, in the semifinals.

Rubin will play Fabiola Zuluaga, who beat Emilie Loit of France, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.
