MONTREAL (AP) -- Top-ranked Serena Williams withdrew from the Rogers AT&T Cup on Tuesday, citing acute tendinitis in her left knee.

Williams first injured her knee during practice Monday and aggravated the injury during practice Tuesday afternoon.

"I took a nap this afternoon and when I woke up, my knee was swollen," Williams said. "I have to take a few days off and try to get ready for the U.S. Open. That's my main goal now."

The French Open and Wimbledon champion was scheduled to play her first-round match against Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia on Tuesday.

Williams' spot in the 56-player draw was taken by American Melien Tu.

Williams had a 21-match winning streak halted by Chanda Rubin in the semifinals of the JPMorgan Chase Open last week in Los Angeles. Williams has a record of 38-4 this year.

A WTA status report said Williams' injury would be re-evaluated this week by her doctor in Florida.
