Hingis comeback cut short by Dokic Posted: Friday August 16, 2002 11:42 PMUpdated: Sunday August 18, 2002 5:04 AM MONTREAL (Reuters) -- Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic cut short the comeback of former world number one Martina Hingis by knocking her out of the Canadian Open tennis quarter-finals 6-4 6-3 on Friday. The $1.2 million Canadian Open, a warm-up for the U.S. Open, was the first tournament Hingis had played in three months, after undergoing left ankle surgery in May. Third seed Dokic frequently outflanked Hingis with her powerful shots in a match that lasted little more than an hour. "I was sometimes a little slow. She played well from both sides," Hingis said. "She is in a tournament routine and that is what I need to get back to." Hingis, who only resumed training six weeks ago, will play next week at New Haven before moving on to flushing Meadows for the U.S. Open, where she hopes to challenge the dominance of the Williams sisters. "I'm not going to go there just to show up," a laughing Hingis replied when asked about her chances at the last Grand Slam of the year, which begins on August 26. Hingis held the number one ranking for 73 consecutive weeks and 209 total weeks before loosing it in October last year to Jennifer Capriati. She has won five Grand Slams titles in her career, the last in Melbourne in 1999, and 40 WTA tournaments, the last in Tokyo in February. The 21-year-old Swiss has earned close to $18 million since turning professional eight years ago, the third highest behind Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova.
