Serena awaits Barna hopes Williams will have 'adjustment problems'Posted: Wednesday September 25, 2002 1:05 AMUpdated: Wednesday September 25, 2002 1:07 AM LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) -- German qualifier Anca Barna won her first-round match Wednesday at the Sparkassen Cup against Belgium's Elke Clijsters, setting up a match against top-seeded Serena Williams. Barna will face Williams Wednesday after ousting the younger sister of Top-10 ranked Kim Clijsters, 6-4, 6-3. The German played the world No. 1 at the U.S. Open two years ago and took a set from the American. "Maybe Serena will have adjustment problems on this surface. I've already played four matches -- plus she doesn't like my slice serve," said Barna, who reached the final at Estoril this year. Slovakian Janette Husarova pulled the first upset at the $585,000 event, ousting eighth-seeded Magdalena Maleeva, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The Sparkassen Cup has pulled together one of its strongest fields ever -- drawing six of the world's Top 10 -- with defending champion Kim Clijsters pursuing a triple, winning the same event three times. Of active players, only Venus Williams has done that. In other matches, Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States beat Russia's Elena Likhovtseva, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, Czech player Iveta Benesova of Argentina's Paola Suarez, 6-3, 6-1, and Germany's Barbara Rittner beat Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (1). Most of the top players swing into action on Wednesday and Thursday.
