Weary Dokic gets past Majoli in Zurich Posted: Monday October 14, 2002 1:50 PMUpdated: Monday October 14, 2002 4:54 PM ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- Fifth-seeded Jelena Dokic defeated Iva Majoli 6-1, 6-4 Monday in the opening round of the Swisscom Challenge. The match lasted just 54 minutes. Majoli obtained her place in the tournament after Martina Hingis withdrew last Thursday with recurring ankle problems. Dokic, playing in her 28th tournament and 74th match of the season, said she has been tired recently because of her busy schedule. "I'm happy with today. I've been so tired," Dokic said. "I've been playing in too many tournaments. It's the end of the year, and I shouldn't be playing so much. "I haven't been playing my best tennis the last two or three weeks." In other results, Russia's Elena Dementieva defeated Anca Barna 6-2, 7-5, Russian Tatiana Panova beat Luxembourg's Anne Kremer 6-4, 6-2, and Spain's Conchita Martinez defeated Myriam Casanova 6-4, 6-3.
The top four seeds, Jennifer Capriati, defending champion
Lindsay Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin, all had
first-round byes.
