ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- Top-seeded Jennifer Capriati was eliminated by Conchita Martinez 6-0, 6-3 Wednesday in the second round of the Swisscom Challenge.

Capriati had her left ankle taped early in the second set of the 77-minute match after an awkward landing.

"My ankle wasn't hurting in the first set. I simply had a bad start," said Capriati, who received a first-round bye. "I couldn't get my rhythm. I was missing my shots. I set it up for her to dictate the points. In the first set, I wasn't even playing tennis."

She's lost her opening match at each of her past two tournaments and now might have to pull out of next week's event in Linz, Austria.

"I landed funny; I think I jammed it," Capriati said. "It was a freakish thing. Very strange. It eased up a lot after I had it taped. But I can still feel it's there. I'll have to see what's going on before thinking about Linz."

Martinez will face either Alexandra Stevenson or Jelena Dokic in the quarterfinals.

"It's a great win," said Martinez, ranked 47th. "I felt really confident. I played my game and everything went my way, but I didn't expect to beat Jennifer 6-0 in the first set."

Elsewhere, defending champion Lindsay Davenport reached the quarterfinals by beating Tatiana Panova 6-2, 6-2, fourth-seeded Justine Henin beat Anna Smashnova 6-3, 6-1, and Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian knocked off Anastasia Myskina 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Like Capriati, Davenport is a three-time Grand Slam tournament champion.

"I probably would have preferred a longer, tougher match to practice more shots. It was pretty quick," Davenport said after her 50-minute victory.

"But I guess it's always good to start off well. Sometimes you have to be happy to have energy for the rest of the week."

Davenport, a former No. 1, is coming back from a knee injury. She had surgery in January and returned to action in July.
