Three seeds fall at Gold Coast

GOLD COAST, Australia (Ticker) -- Ai Sugiyama of Japan, Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand and Iva Majoli of Croatia were upset Monday in the opening round of the $170,000 Uncle Tobys Hardcourts tennis event.

Spanish qualifier Maria Sanchez Lorenzo held off the third-seeded Sugiyama with a 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 7-5 triumph.

Meanwhile, Italy's Tathiana Garbin overcame the fifth-seeded Tanasugarn, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, and Switzerland's Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian knocked off the seventh-seeded Majoli, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

In the second round, Garbin will meet South African qualifier Chanelle Scheepers, who converted her ninth match point to record a 6-4, 7-6 (15-13) win over Australian wild card Samantha Stosur.

A pair of seeds also advanced at the Tier III event. Russia's Elena Bovina, the fourth seed, outdueled compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova, a wild-card entrant, 7-5, 6-4.

American Meghann Shaughnessy, the sixth seed, posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Switzerland's Myriam Casanova.

Francesca Schiavone of Italy owned a 7-5, 2-1 lead over Cristina Torrens Valero when the Spaniard was forced to retire due to a muscle spasm in her lower back.

Schiavone's second-round opponent is top seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.

First prize is $27,000.
