Johansson out of Australian Open

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- Defending champion Thomas Johansson has withdrawn from the Australian Open because of a knee injury.

Johansson told tabloid Expressen his ailing knee wouldn't recover in time for the Grand Slam tournament starting Jan. 13 in Melbourne.

"The knee is better but not well enough that I can train. And if it's not good enough for training then of course I can't play a match," Johansson said.

The 27-year-old Swede has been plagued by injuries since winning the Australian Open last year. He was being treated for a knee injury that flared up in November, but decided Friday he wouldn't recover in time to defend his title.

Johansson said he tried to remain positive despite his bad luck with injuries and ruled out ending his career anytime soon.

"It takes more than this to make me give up. I still feel like playing," he said.
