Ivanisevic, Seles WD from Wimbledon Posted: Sunday June 15, 2003 5:04 PMLONDON (Ticker) -- Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia was forced to pull out of the event for the second straight year on Sunday. Ivanisevic has struggled with a variety of injuries since winning the 2001 Wimbledon title. He pulled out of this year's event after sustaining a knee injury while practicing with countryman Mario Ancic earlier this week. A shoulder problem prevented him from defending his title last year, but this summer he looked to be healthy after participating in the Stella Artois Championships at Queen's Club. He was beaten in the first round by Jan Vacek but was hoping to continue his Wimbledon preparations in the Samsung Open at Nottingham, which starts on Monday. His latest injury, however, forced him to withdraw from that event, and now the 31-year-old has decided he will not be fit in time for Wimbledon, which begins June 23. Former women's world No. 1 Monica Seles also has withdrawn due to continuing problems with her foot. The American, who was Wimbledon runner-up to Steffi Graf in 1992, struggled three weeks ago at the French Open where she lost in straight sets to Russia's Nadia Petrova in the first round. Seles has said that she will retire if she continues to be plagued by foot problems. Argentina's Mariana Diaz-Olivia and Anne Kremer of Luxembourg also have withdrawn and former men's world No. 1 Marcelo Rios, who dislikes grass tournaments, also is out. © 2003 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP
