EASTBOURNE, England (AP) -- More than 3,000 people were evacuated from the Eastbourne tennis tournament Saturday after tournament officials said they received a threat by phone. They would not discuss the nature of the threat.

The evacuation delayed by nearly three hours the start of the grass-court final between Chanda Rubin and Conchita Martinez.

The fans were ordered to leave at about 12:20 p.m. and were allowed to return at about 1:45 p.m. after they were checked by security. Police searched the grounds but found nothing suspicious.

Rubin and Martinez began play about an hour later in this tuneup for Wimbledon, which starts Monday.

"Based on the information received, and in light of the current security climate in [Britain], the decision was taken to evacuate the grounds," organizers said in a statement.
