Gonzalez upset by Volandri Posted: Friday July 25, 2003 4:18 PMUpdated: Friday July 25, 2003 6:54 PM UMAG, Croatia (AP) -- Second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile lost to Filippo Volandri of Italy 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) Friday in the quarterfinals of the Croatia Open. Gonzalez, who quit during the semifinals in Stuttgart, Germany, last weekend because of stomach pains, vomited on the court Friday after failing to convert match point at 5-3 in the third set. It was not immediately clear what troubled Gonzalez, but he openly showed fatigue and pain for the rest of the match. Gonzalez lost another two match points, but also denied Volandri on one at 6-5 in the third set. Volandri finally prevailed in the tiebreaker to end the 2 1/2-hour match -- the most dramatic of the tournament. In the semifinals Saturday, Volandri will face Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia, who downed Alberto Martin of Spain 7-5, 6-2. The other semifinal will include Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal, who will play his first ATP semifinal against top-seeded countryman and defending champion Carlos Moya. Nadal beat former Croatia Open champion Magnus Norman 6-3, 6-4, while Moya ousted eighth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain 6-1, 6-2. The sixth-seeded Nadal secured a 3-0 lead against Norman -- the 1999 winner and 1998 finalist -- in the first set, and the Swede lost his last chance to break in the eighth game of the second set. "It was a hard match for both of us," Nadal said. "It wasn't my best day. But the most important thing is that I won." Moya, who beat Ferrer in the final here last year, took advantage of his opponent's numerous unforced errors. Ferrer slammed his racket on the ground three times during the match. "I was self-confident, and he was tired," Moya said. "It would be much harder" to defeat Nadal, he said. Nadal beat Moya at the Hamburg Masters in May.
