Becker faces new demand for back taxes

MUNICH, Germany (AP) -- Boris Becker's lawyer said Monday the retired tennis star faces a new demand from German authorities for back taxes, but denied a newspaper report the amount was as high as $752,000.

The Suddeutsche Zeitung daily reported Monday that the three-time Wimbledon winner, sentenced to two years probation for tax evasion last October, has attracted the attention of Munich's tax collection department, which can freeze bank accounts and assets.

"There is contested income, but less than that amount," said Joerg Weigell. "There has been no warning issued about the taxes from the city of Munich, nor the threat of the collections department."

Munich tax officials refused to comment on the matter, citing privacy laws. The taxes stem from Becker's playing days in the 1990s.

Last year, Becker was subjected to a highly publicized tax-evasion trial by Munich prosecuters for claiming he lived in Monaco while actually conducting his business in Munich.

Along with the two years probation, Becker was slapped with $565,000 in fines -- a penalty that stopped short of the prison sentence prosecutors had sought. He paid $3.4 milllion in back taxes to settle the matter.

Becker's career since he retired from the game in 1999 has been rocky, and there has been consistent unconfirmed speculation that he has squandered a fortune accumulated as a player and top pitchman for products in Germany.

His problems include a string of failed businesses, plus a costly divorce from former wife Barbara. He is also paying support for an out-of-wedlock child with a Russian model.
