Safarova advances in New Haven, Lepchenko retires |


NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Eighth-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic advanced in the first match of the New Haven Open when American Varvara Lepchenko retired with a left wrist injury.
Safarova was leading 6-3, 4-1 when the left-handed Lepchenko retired.
The 19th-ranked Safarova broke into the top 20 this season for the first time in her career.
