PARIS (AP) -- Mark Philippoussis and Tommy Haas got off to winning starts Monday on the first day of the $2.55 million Paris Open, but Thomas Enqvist surprisingly lost to Gianluca Pozzi.

Philippoussis, ranked 19th in the world, got 20 aces and beat Daniel Vacek 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6), advancing to a second-round match against 10th-seeded Petr Korda.

In his first appearance at the Paris Open, Haas defeated Carlos Costa 7-5, 6-1.

Haas reached the final of the recent Lyon Grand Prix after walkovers against Pete Sampras and Marcelo Rios.

In the next round, the 20-year-old German faces Alex Corretja, the player who beat him in the Lyon final.

Pozzi was one of several surprise winners Monday, beating the 18th-ranked Enqvist, 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hour, 14 minutes. Pozzi, ranked 58th, plays Andre Agassi in a second-round match Tuesday.

World junior champion Arnaud Di Pasquale beat Richard Fromberg 6-3, 6-4, while Marc Rosset, a finalist in this tournament in 1994, beat Wayne Ferreira 6-3, 6-4.

Thomas Johansson will play Pete Sampras in the second round, after beating 20-year-old Sebastien Grosjean 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.
