MICHAEL FARBER
Biography
Senior Writer Michael Farber joined Sports Illustrated in January 1994, and is one of the magazine's top hockey and skiing writers. Farber will contribute regularly to CNN/SI, the 24-hour sports news network from CNN and Sports Illustrated.
Before coming to SI, Farber spent 15 years at the Montreal Gazette, three years at the Hackensack (New Jersey) Record, and one year at the Sun Bulletin in Honolulu. While at the Gazette, Farber won a National Newspaper award in 1982 and a Canada Sportswri
ting award in 1990. While a columnist at the Gazette, Farber penned "Sometimes Life Gets in the Way," a compendium of his best Gazette columns.
Farber identifies his story on the Alou family, titled "Diamond Hitters," as his most compelling piece of work to date for Sport Illustrated. His most memorable sports moment came in 1988 when Canadian Ben Johnson was stripped of the world record he had s
et in the 100 meters in 9.79 seconds at the Summer Olympics. According to Farber, his favorite sport is "anything but auto racing" and in his free time he enjoys playing golf and watching old movies that feature the Marx Brothers.
Born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, and a 1973 graduate of Rutgers University, Farber resides in Quebec with his wife and two children.
