Viva Sergio Garcia looking for breakout year on PGA TourPosted: Saturday March 18, 2000 08:41 PM
Sergio Garcia took the golf world by storm last year. CNNSI.com's Jim Huber had a chance to talk with the youngster this week and asked the 20-year-old Spaniard what he's learned in his first year as a professional. Sergio Garcia : Well I've learned a lot of things. it's been a great year for me, played pretty well and won some tournaments. I'm really looking forward to start winning this year, keep learning and keep playing good golf. Jim Huber : Now you begin your run at Bay Hill toward Augusta, which will be your second trip to the Masters. What do you expect and what kind of goals have you set for yourself? Garcia : Well, I hope to win over the next three weeks. I'd love to play well, feel comfortable with myself, and feel like I can play some good golf. If it goes the right way and I win, perfect. If not, just try to get some good tournaments. Huber : Sergio, what do you think of the rivalry that we've (media) basically created between you and Tiger Woods? Garcia : I've talked a lot of times about this. I think it's not only Tiger and me. He's playing really well. But there's a lot of guys out there who can win the tournament and you can see every week that it's not the same guy who is winning. So, I think we should take care of everybody else and not just a couple of guys who have won. Huber : Are you prepared to make a commitment to one side or the other in the near future? Are you going to play more European or American tournaments? Where are you going from here? Garcia : Well I like my chances right now playing in the States and in Europe in the same year. I don't think I'm going to change much right now. I don't know, maybe later I'll think more in I don't know how many years. Right now I like the way I'm scheduling myself. I'm looking forward to playing both tours. Huber : Sergio, we've seen your commercial a lot. Your English lessons are obviously working pretty well. Garcia : (laughs) Thank you. Huber : Are you getting along a little bit better now in that department? Garcia : Yes, last year helped me being here all year playing almost all year. The good thing is that I'm probably talking more English than Spanish right now. I think it's helping my English a lot and hopefully one of these days, I'll be almost (like) you.
