I need a timeout here, because I've got something to say to John Rocker.

I give you credit for finally recognizing you've damaged your teammates, but you're too late and you haven't done enough.

Why? Because you clammed up after reading your script ... er, apology at spring training, and forced your teammates to answer for your opinions.

You've distracted them, and detracted from a good season. Andres Galarraga's comeback story, for example, is inspiring, and nobody hears it because they're covering your backside for you.

It's America, say what you want. But, be man enough to back up your convictions and face the music.

I do.

You Fired Back

After Fred's rant appeared on Sports Tonight, CNNSI.com users shared their opinions. Here are some of their responses:

Fred, knock it off. Rocker's a ballplayer, not a senator or presidential candidate, for crying out loud. It's not a job requirement that he be articulate or project the proper degree of remorse. Anyway, the fans and hypocritical media here in New York have said a lot more vicious things about Rocker than he ever said about anyone else. Stop tormenting the guy!
Ben Sharav, New York, N.Y.

I agree with Fred about Rocker's convictions. However, it has not been Rocker distracting his teammates, it's the media beating a dead horse. Alright, a horse on life support. Galarraga's comeback is amazing. If Fred thinks it deserves more coverage, then he should do it. After all, who's the sports writer?
Kevin Williams, Ramstein AB, Germany

I agree. Rocker knew his remarks were inflamatory, he expressed remorse only when he was forced to do so, and did so half-heartedly. Rocker is the epitome of the modern athlete - one who screws up big-time, and then tries to blow it off by claiming it has been blown out of proportion.
Dave Crowder, Mannheim, Germany
