Jim Edmonds had quite a coming out party in his post-season debut for St. Louis. Edmonds had three hits in five trips to the plate including a home run off Greg Maddux as the Cardinals beat the visiting Atlanta Braves 7-5 in the opening game of the National League's Division Series. But it wasn't all easy for the centerfielder as CNNSI.com's Ozzie Smith found out when spoke with Edmonds after the game.

Ozzie Smith: How important was it coming in to today to jump on these guys this way?

Jim Edmonds: Well, we just want to prove the fact that we can play with this team. We want to try and win Game 1 obviously at home and get a little bit of an advantage. And there's not a team, there's not a person out there in the world right now that is picking us to beat this team. So we're just kind of feeding off of that and try to do the best that we can.

Smith: Now you didn't hit real well against the Braves during the course of the season. But here in post-season, they have a hard time getting you out. What adjustments did you make?

Edmonds: I just tried not to try and do too much today. I knew Greg Maddux is a good pitcher and he moved the ball around a lot. I just tried to go up there and put the bat on the ball and not try to do too much. We had a little bit of trying to put the ball in play today and not go for the home run speech today and it worked for us. Hopefully we can do the same next time and we can just keep playing well. I think that's the key.

Smith: Did you hurt yourself a little bit out there today? What exactly did you do?

Edmonds: It didn't feel too good today out in the outfield. I bent my wrist back in one inning and then when I slipped, I landed on my tailbone and it felt like my spine went out of the top of my head. So, it kind of numbed me for a second. If I could walk, I told them there was two outs, I can get through this inning I should be all right. If I'd had to come out and hit right there it would have been tough. But we were in a good situation where I could get an inning off and come out and just try and stay loose.

Smith: Thank you and good luck Thursday.

Edmonds: Thank you.
