Better to receive OU wideouts get passing gradeUpdated: Monday January 01, 2001 8:28 PM
If Oklahoma hopes to beat Florida State in the Orange Bowl and win the national title, they will need four special wide receivers to have a big game. Josh Norman, Curtis Fagan, Antwone Savage and Andre Woolfolk are all sophomores except for Norman who is a junior. They account for 22 receiving touchdowns this season and overall there are five players with 30-plus catches. Their coach, their quarterback and the players talk about the OU passing game. Steve Spurrier Jr. - wide receivers coach: What's great about receivers is they're good enough athletes to play defensive back or running back and the guys that I've found have made the transition well, can run, get open and catch the ball. Andre Woolfolk - 6-0, 192, Denver: I guess we're competitive every day. It starts at practice. We go out there and compete hard and fight for position. When you get out there everybody knows they are going to make plays. Curtis Fagan - 6-0, 175, Houston: There's competition all the time from the beginning to the end I think. When I see guys out there making great plays it pumps me up and gets me ready to come out there and do something. We're out there pushing each other and making each other better. DEEP SPEED Antwone Savage - 6-0, 182, Albany, Georgia: We all argue about that all the time. One day, one of us might be faster than the other. Spurrier: Curtis Fagan and Antwone Savage are both 4.4 guys. Andre Woolfolk is a 4.4 guy. Three guys that are extremely fast. Josh Norman - 6-2, 228, Midland, Texas: On the field, I'm going to have to give it [speed] to Curtis Fagan. That cat can move man. He can flat-out run.
Josh Heupel - quarterback: I don't know who is the fastest. That might be a little contest that we have after the season. YOUR GOOD HANDS PEOPLE Savage: I'd have to say everybody because all of us come out with good catches at great times in games. Fagan: I'm going to have to go with myself on that one [laughs]. GIMME THE BALL Heupel: Inside the huddle they don't get too much like that. On the sidelines they're all screaming for the ball a little bit. They're all wide open. Fagan: You've got three receivers talking about, "Man, I was open on this route. Why don't you run this route? It's like, 'Just chill,' you know what I'm saying?" WE ARE NOT YOUR DADDY'S SOONERS: Heupel: Times have changed at the University of Oklahoma. Our offensive scheme has definitely changed from years past. And our success is greatly due to the guys that we have out wide who are able to make plays
