NFL Preview Notes and Quotes

Here's what CNN Sports Illustrated's Bob Lorenz, Trev Alberts and Irving Fryar had to say on NFL Preview on Sunday, July 15 at 10 a.m. on CNN:

JETS CURTIS MARTIN - Live Guest

  • NFL Preview Analyst, Trev Alberts on Michael Vick: The Falcons think they can make the playoffs even without starting Vick immediately. If Chris Chandler can stay healthy they think this is a team that can win. You have to be very careful with the rookies."

  • Alberts on the Colts: "Look at this team going into the draft. Yes they have a nice offense, but until this team starts addressing their defense they have a problem. This is a team that has too many needs defensively to do anything."

  • NFL Preview Analyst, Irving Fryar on the Titans: "The major glitch with this team is at receiver. You have Thigpen gone and Pickens gone to name a few. You have to simplify this offense put these guys in the position where they can be successful, in the holes and in the zones, where they can catch the ball.

  • Alberts on Terrell Davis: "He is at a real crossing point right now in his career. All of a sudden guys in the locker room are questioning him, "Are you tough enough?" Davis has to be that team leader and get the team back on track if they want to get to the Super Bowl."

  • Live Guest, Curtis Martin on New Head Coach Howard Edwards: "Something that is so impressive to me about Herman Edwards is, I've never been around a coach where his entire team has nothing negative to say about him. We've had Bill (Parcell's), and with him it's like communism, it's his way or the highway. With Herman we have more of a democracy, he's a players coach. We are excited about Herman and we appreciate him. It is like the sun is shining again."

  • Alberts on the Giants: "The whole Giants organization suffers from lack of respect. If there is any guy that can bounce back from the Super Bowl performance it is Kerry Collins just because of what he has went through in his life off the field. The one thing I've learned from the Super Bowl is that the Giants have to have a running game."

  • Fryar on the Giants: "They will have a running game because of Ron Dayne. He'll come back as a new man this year. Here's a guy who has rejuvenated himself on the off-season.

  • Alberts on Elvis Grbac: "He'll have a great year. This is a perfect fit for this offense. He's the best play-action quarterback in the NFL. He'll have a huge year for the Raven's and they'll get back to the Super Bowl."

  • Fryar on Tony Banks: "He has a running game but Banks has to get himself together. I don't know how Banks will do because we have never seen Banks do anything."

  • Trev on the Saints: "I like New Orleans. I think they are a good football team. I love their coach but there are too many questions. Who is going to start at quarterback and what about their running game? They will be in the playoffs, they won't go to the Super Bowl."

  • Martin on Santana Moss: "I am excited about Moss because we do need some help at the receiver position. He has the speed I haven't seen yet. He has the hear t and the mentality to make an immediate impact."

  • Martin on Flutie versus Johnson: "I would take Flutie over Johnson. Have you ever seen HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS? I always thought he was one of the shrunk people throwing the ball out of the grass. He gets the job done and when it boils down to it that is what matters."

  • Irving on Rob Johnson: "I think the West Coast offense is perfect for Johnson. It's controlled and not wide open. This job was given to him. If I'm a player on the Bill's I'm waiting for him to take control."

  • Alberts on Rob Johnson: "If I'm a player on this team I'm excited because Johnson is going to be fantastic. The problem last year was he held the ball too long. He got sacked. He's a great, accurate passer."

  • POLL- Which AFC non-playoff team from last year will be the biggest factor this year? : Out of more than 11,000 votes 33% of the users chose the Seahawks, 21% the Jaguars, 19% the Jets, 17% the Chiefs and 11% the Bills.
