Dale Earnhardt is not the first tragic loss for NASCAR.

In 1993, one of Earnhardt's main rivals, Davey Allison, died in a helicopter crash at Talladega Superspeedway. His widow, Liz Allison, joined Sports Tonight's Kara Henderson Monday.

Kara Henderson: Have you been able to pass along your condolences to the Earnhardt family, and what do you say at a time like this?

Liz Allison: I have not talked to Teresa [Earnhardt, Dale's wife] yet. I know what she is going through right now. It is a very difficult time and a very chaotic time. I have decided to just step back and I will be in touch with her as the week goes on. There is really not much I can say to her, just that I am here and I will be here when things settle down. I will just try to give her some advice and many prayers along the way.

Henderson: Is there a support system among the NASCAR wives to help deal with the emotional stress of that constant fear of something like this?

Allison: The racing community is a really close-knit family, and it is like a family. You spend every weekend with these people. The wives are very close. You share the same fears, the same joys and Teresa does have a very big support system, and that is what will help her get through this.

Henderson: How do expect the other drivers and wives to deal with this tragedy?

Allison: You really don't want to think that this can happen, but you keep it in the back of your mind. For the drivers, though, they know the risks and they love the sport and they go out and every week and don't think about what can happen. First and foremost, they are racers and they love doing what they do.

Henderson: Teresa was well known for being involved in the business aspect of Dale's racing, do you expect her to carry on in his name?

Allison: I do. I think that she will. She has always been involved in his business and she knows what is going on day to day. She has been very involved with the new teams with Michael [Waltrip], Steve [Park] and Dale [Earnhardt] Jr. And I expect that she will continue to do so, probably even more so now.
