BASEBALL TRANSACTIONS
Baltimore Orioles -- Optioned pitcher Lesli Brea to Rochester of the International League (AAA); purchased the contract of pitcher Jay Spurgeon from Rochester.
Boston Red Sox -- Placed outfielder Israel Alcantara on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 13, with a lower back strain; purchased the contract of infielder Lou Merloni from Pawtucket of the International League (AAA).
Chicago Cubs -- Recalled pitcher Jamie Arnold from Iowa of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Seattle Mariners -- Placed pitcher Robert Ramsay on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left biceps; recalled pitcher Joel Pineiro from Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Schaumburg Flyers (Northern League/Independent) -- Signed pitcher Joe Klancnik and infielder Larry Bethea.

Golden State Warriors -- Signed forward Chris Porter.

Detroit Lions -- Signed free agent tight end Alfred Pupunu; released quarterback Steve Stenstrom.
Kansas City Chiefs -- Released wide receiver Andre Rison.
Miami Dolphins -- Waived running back Curtis Alexander, tight end Carlos Nuno and defensive tackle Noel Scarlett.
Minnesota Vikings -- Released the following players: defensive back Anthony Bass, offensive lineman Seth Dittman, defensive tackle Tim Englehardt, tight end Brody Heffner-Liddiard, cornerback Carl Kidd, safety Anthony Marshall, linebackers Kevin McCullar and Mike Parker, wide receiver Jermaine Sheffield and Running back Marvin Welch.
New England Patriots -- Released wide receivers Aaron Bailey, Matt Bumgardner, Tony Gaiter and Vincent Brisby, cornerback Mike Woods, safeties Rodney Rideau and Cory Gilliard and tight end Dave Stachelsky; signed wide receiver Chris Calloway.
New York Jets -- Agreed to a contract with tackle Jumbo Elliott; waived cornerback Buddy Crutchfield, tackles Anthony Byrd and Mark Bristol, wide receiver Cory Peterson, safety Jonathon Eaton, linebacker Dax Strohmeyer and punter Andy Russ.
Hamilton Tiger Cats (CFL) -- Signed quarterback Billy Dicken and defensive back Kevin Brooks.

Buffalo Sabres -- Announced the resignation of director of communications Gil Chorbajian.
Chicago Blackhawks -- Signed right wing Aaron Downey.
Colorado Avalanche -- Reached agreement with restricted free agent center Joe Sakic on a one-year contract.
Edmonton Oilers -- Named Mark Lamb assistant coach in charge of player development.
Los Angeles Kings -- Agreed to terms with restricted free agent center Bryan Smolinski on a one-year contract; announced their American Hockey League affiliate will be called the Manchester Monarchs.
Philadelphia Flyers -- Signed unrestricted free agent left wing Michel Picard, who had been with the Edmonton Oilers, to a two-year contract.
San Jose Sharks -- Signed defenseman Greg Andrusak, who had been with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Tampa Bay Lightning -- Re-signed center Ryan Johnson.
Vancouver Canucks -- Agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defenseman Scott Lachance, who had been with the Montreal Canadiens.
Kansas City Blades (IHL) -- Re-signed defenseman Jan Vodrazka.
