BASEBALL TRANSACTIONS
Chicago Cubs - Placed pitcher Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his right shoulder; recalled pitcher Todd Wellemeyer from Iowa of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Chicago White Sox - Placed infielder Willie Harris on the bereavement list; purchased the contract of infielder-catcher Jamie Burke from Charlotte of the International League (AAA).
Houston Astros - Recalled pitcher Ezequiel Astacio from Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); optioned outfielder Luke Scott to Round Rock.
Kansas City Royals - Activated third baseman Mark Teahen from the 15-day disabled list; optioned outfielder Matt Diaz to Omaha of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Los Angeles Dodgers - Activated pitcher Wilson Alvarez from the 15-day disabled list; optioned pitcher Buddy Carlyle to Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Philadelphia Phillies - Placed first baseman Jim Thome on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, with a lower back strain; placed outfielder Kenny Lofton on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, with tendinitis in his right hamstring; activated outfielder Marlon Byrd from the 15-day disabled list; recalled first baseman Ryan Howard from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of the International League (AAA).
San Diego Padres - Designated outfielder Adam Hyzdu for assignment; purchased the contract of infielder Damian Jackson from Portland of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Washington Nationals - Placed outfielder Terrmel Sledge on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring pull; transferred pitcher Joey Eischen to the 60-day disabled list; purchased the contract of outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds from New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); recalled outfielder Endy Chavez from New Orleans.
