BASEBALL

Baltimore Orioles -- Purchased the contract of infielder Aaron Ledesma from Rochester of the International league (AAA).

Chicago Cubs -- Traded pitcher Frank Castillo to the Colorado Rockies for minor-league pitcher Matt Pool and assigned Pool to Orlando of the Southern League (AA); recalled pitcher Dave Schwartzbaugh from Iowa of the American Association (AAA).

Cincinnati Reds -- Acquired outfielder Jon Nunnally and infielder-outfielder Chris Stynes from the Kansas City Royals for pitchers Hector Carrasco and Scott Service; signed shortstop Brandon Larson, their first-round pick in this year's amateur draft.

Kansas City Royals -- Signed pitcher Dan Reichert, their first round draft pick, and assigned him to Spokane of the Northwest League (A); optioned pitcher Jim Pittsley to Omaha of the American Association (AAA); signed free agent pitcher Pavel Budsky.

New York Yankees -- Placed center fielder Bernie Williams on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring; recalled outfielder Scott Pose from Columbus of the International League (AAA).

San Diego Padres -- Signed infielder Kevin Nicholson, their first round draft choice, and assigned him to Peoria of the Arizona League (A).

St. Louis Cardinals -- Waived pitcher Fernando Valenzuela for the purposes of giving him his unconditional release; recalled pitcher Eric Ludwick from Louisville of the American Association (AAA).

Toronto Blue Jays -- Assigned pitchers Benny Lowe and Sean McClellan from Dunedin of the Florida State League (A) to Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League (A), and Jim Mann from Dunedin to Hagerstown.

Charleston Alley Cats (South Atlantic League/A) -- Signed pitcher Hugh Holliday.

BASKETBALL

New Jersey Nets -- Re-signed free agent guard Sam Cassell to a multi-year contract.

Phoenix Suns -- Signed guard Stephen Jackson, their second-round draft pick, to a one-year contract.

Vancouver Grizzlies -- Re-signed free agent guard Chris Robinson to a two-year contract.

Sacramento Monarchs (WNBA) -- Placed guard Ruthie Bolton-Holifield on the injured list with a minor left knee strain.

FOOTBALL

Jacksonville Jaguars -- Waived defensive tackle Andre Davis; signed defensive end Jabbar Threats.

Miami Dolphins -- Waived defensive end Latori Workman.

New England Patriots -- Signed running back Sedrick Shaw and safety Chris Carter.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Agreed to terms with cornerback Chad Scott, their first-round draft pick.

HOCKEY

Boston Bruins -- Re-signed center Ted Donato to a one-year contract.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Agreed to terms with center Espen Knutsen.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Signed defenseman Pavel Kubina, and centers Eduard Pershin and Vadim Yepanchintsev.

Vancouver Canucks -- Agreed to terms with center Lubomir Vaic.

Kansas City Blades (IHL) -- Signed right wing Brent Cullaton and defenseman Shawn Heins.

Pensacola Ice Pilots (ECHL) -- Signed defenseman Matt Pagnutti.

Flint Generals (UHL) -- Announced that Robbie S. Nichols will remain head coach and general manager through the 1998-99 season.

COLLEGE

Columbus State -- Named Greg Appleton baseball coach.

Hofstra -- Named Monica Holmes assistant volleyball coach.

Merrimack -- Announced the resignation of assistant athletic director Peter Paladino.

Wentworth Institute of Technology -- Announced the resignation of assistant men's basketball coach Chris Barley.

West Texas A&M -- Named Jeff Cordell assistant football coach.
