BASEBALL

Anaheim Angels -- Placed pitcher Rich LeLucia on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 15th; purchased the contract of pitcher Shad Williams from vancouver of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Baltimore Orioles -- Activated catcher Chris Hoiles from the disabled list; designated catcher Tim Laker for assignment.

Boston Red Sox -- Agreed to terms with pitcher John Curtice, their first round pick in the June draft; signed pitcher Travis Harper, their third round pick in the June draft.

Cincinnati Reds -- Activated pitcher Pete Schourek from the 15-day disabled list; placed catcher Brook Fordyce on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 16th, with a strained left hip flexor.

Colorado Rockies -- Optioned pitcher Nate Minchey to Colorado Springs of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Florida Marlins -- Recalled pitcher LIvian Hernandez from Charlotte of the International League (AAA).

Philadelphia Phillies -- Activated pitcher Ryan Nye from the 15-day disabled list and assigned him to Scranton-Wilkes Barre of the International League (AAA).

San Francisco Giants -- Acquired pitcher Pat Rapp from the Florida Marlins for pitchers Brandon Leese and Bobby Rector.

Seattle Mariners -- Acquired pitchers Omar Olivares and Felipe Lira from the Detroit Tigers for pitchers Scott Sanders and Dean Crow and third baseman Carlos Villalobos.

Texas Rangers -- Purchased the contract of pitcher Glenn Dishman from Toledo of the International League; designated outifleder Jimmy Hurst for reassignment.

El Paso Diablos (Texas League/AA) -- Announced the resignation of president Jim Paul, effective August 15th; named general manager Rick Parr as his replacement.

Huntsville Stars (Southern League/AA) -- Activated pitcher Steve Connelly from the disabled list; released pitcher Bob Baxter.

Cedar Rapids Kernels (Midwest League/A) -- Added outfielder Jeff Guiel to the roster.

Thunder Bay Whiskey Jacks (Northern League/Independent) -- Announced the resignation of pitching coach Mike Browning.

BASKETBALL

Charlotte Hornets -- Named Paul Silas assistant coach.

Cleveland Cavaliers -- Named Steve Schur assistant director of media relations.

Orlando Magic -- Signed forward Derek Strong to a one-year contract.

Sacramento Monarchs (WNBA) -- Waived guard Corissa Yasen; added guard/forward Laure Savasta to the roster.

FOOTBALL

Arizona Cardinals -- Waived defensive tackle Blaine Berger and linebacker Wesley Leasy.

Baltimore Ravens -- Signed safety Kim Herring, a second round pick in the 1997 draft, to a three-year contract.

Chicago Bears -- Signed offensive lineman Bill Schultz; named Tom Rossley volunteer offensive assistant coach and scout.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Signed cornerback Jimmy Spencer to a two-year contract extension; agreed to terms on a five-year contract with linebacker Reinard Wilson, their first round pick in the 1997 draft; placed offensive lineman Kevin Sargent on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Green Bay Packers -- Claimed safety Sean Boyd on waivers from the Atlanta Falcons; released cornerback Matthew Dorsett.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Agreed to a three-year contract with wide receiver Chris Penn.

Minnesota Vikings -- Signed linebacker Dwayne Rudd, their first round pick in the 1997 draft.

New Orleans Saints -- Signed quarterback Danny Wuerffel, their fourth round pick in the 1997 draft, to a three-year contract; announced that exclusive rights free agent linebacker Winfred Tubbs has agreed to a tender offer; terminated the contract of defensive tackle Willie Broughton; waived guard Darren Reese; placed tight end Paul Green, guard Mike Jerlich, tackle Keno Hills and running back Ray Zellars on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

New York Giants -- Signed running back Tiki Barber, their second round pick in the 1997 draft, to a three-year contract.

San Francisco 49ers -- Signed tackle Andrew Moore.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Agreed to terms with offensive tackle Jerry Wunsch, their second round pick in the 1997 draft, on a four-year contract, and cornerback Ronde Barber, their third round pick, on a three-year contract; released tight end Tracy Greene, wide receiver Shaston Coleman and cornerback Floyd Young.

Tennessee Oilers -- Signed defensive end Kenny Holmes to a multiyear deal.

Washington Redskins -- Signed quarterback Gus Frerotte to a four-year contract worth $18 million.

HOCKEY

Detroit Red Wings -- Agreed with head coach Scotty Bowman on a two-year contract extension; promoted Ken Holland to general manager; announced assistant coaches Dave Lewis and Barry Smith will return for two more years.

Los Angeles Kings -- Named Bill O'Flaherty director of player personnel; agreed to terms on a two-year contract with defenseman Mark Visheau.

Philadelphia Flyers -- Signed right-winger Brett Bruininks to a one-year contract.

Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL) -- Named Mike Dyck assistant coach.

New Jersey Rockin Rollers (RHI) -- Traded forwards Andy Rymsha, Norm Dezainde and Colin Ward to the Buffalo Wings for forward Dennis Maxwell; traded forward Hugo Belanger to the Anaheim Bullfrogs for forward Kurt Seher; traded Seher to Buffalo for forward Mark Major.

COLLEGE

Arizona State -- Named Mark Bradshaw head diving coach.

Boston College -- Announced the resignation of athletic director Chet Gladchuk to take the same job at Houston.

Houston -- Named Chet Gladchuk athletics director, effective August 25th.

Iowa -- Named Wendy Gatlin women's assistant basketball coach.

Missouri-St. Louis -- Announced the resignation of women's soccer coach Ken Hudson.

New Mexico State -- Named Jim Paul director of athletics.

San Francisco -- Named Scott Howard women's tennis coach and Gil Howard volunteer assistant coach.

Southern Utah -- Named DeLynn Corry interim head baseball coach.

Texas Tech -- Announced sophomore fullback Sammy Morris and sophomore defensive tackle Jason Jones will be academically ineligible for the 1997 football season.
